Weddings 2009…the Events in Bloom trend-watch!!!

EVENTS IN BLOOM….Wedding trend watch 2009

Design choices are always changing with the times, trends come and go so of course wedding decor is no different. I’ve been watching the changes and find them very interesting; so using this information I’ve decided to form a top 10 list of trends for Events in Bloom wedding design 2009. Enjoy!

1. Going on up….this year things are grand, tall vases sometimes with a little accent inside with a grand flowing floral arrangement on top. Whether it is a modern cylinder vase or a more traditional fluted shape with foot; they want it tall and high impact. A sub trend of this particular choice would definitely be mixed height reception table centerpieces. Using the same florals for continuity brides are mixing it up with vase heights for visual interest.

2. METALLICA - the use of clear glass, black & chocolate brown as base colour is fading; replaced by the use of metallics namely bronze, pewter, gun metal & antique gold. They beauty of this being depending on the choice it can result in something very formal or a look that is simply modern. Metallics as accents are being used as well, with branches, wire, stones and other accessories. They are a fun way to add warmth and a little shimmer to an event.

3. Tone it down…monochromatic colour schemes are where its at this year. Tones of white, off white, ivory and creams for instance can still create depth if designed properly. It works with any colour, think shades of pink! How pretty!

4. Vintage glamour – Think mirrored table centers with tall silver plated candelabras, pearls, feathers, rhinestones and cream satin…glamourous, very elegant and decadent.

5. Chuck it! - Back with a vengeance are throw away bouquets!!! There was a period of time where I did not have a solitary request for this but this year over 75% of my brides want a separate mini version of their own bouquet to toss at the single ladies. It might have something to do with a younger generation of brides bringing this tradition back but whatever it is …it is hot!

6. The anti-corsage bride – the pinned on or tied on double bloom, ribbon ladened design is being pushed aside this year for the return of the nosegay. For those not in the “know” the nosegay is a small handheld floral bouquet that is small enough to fit in one hand and is being ordered in spades for the mother of the bride in 2009.

7. Its easy being green – Obviously people are becoming more aware of our earth and everyday products are made that are eco-friendly. So following suit the requests for locally and/or organically grown florals is growing (no pun intended) rapidly. With an influx of local greenhouses and farmers selling cut flowers this trend is definitely here to stay.

8. On the table – Many venues are offering a larger selection of table linens, napkins etc. for their increasingly discerning brides. Textures, brocades, florals, checks, stripes there is an endless array of colour and ways of making a huge statement using linens at your event. Also in 2009 patterned and plain sheer overlays are hugely popular.

9. Have a seat - So the tables have linens and flowers that are creative what about tables? Well corners are king this year with square tables for 8 becoming the newest thing along with long rectangular table resulting in a personal banquet style seating. This allows floral table scapes running down the centers, many vases with floral designs usually at different heights creating a very an impressive and intimate experience for the guests.

10. A little bit of the exotic – simple ferns or leaves are being left behind in favour of endless array of bold and in some cases positively stunning exotic greens and berries to highlight bouquets, centerpieces and even boutonnieres.

I’m sure there are more but these are the 10 that stood out the most that have changed from last years weddings I designed. Its an interesting thing to be able to watch trends form within your own personal line of work. I’ll be keeping track of all of these design choices so I can compare them again to my brides in the coming years to see what changes are in store!
