Bessie & Billy…a little bit of sunshine!

p1040431

Bessie has to be in the top 5 of the most laid back brides we have worked with. She was so calm and organized! Her vision was yellow with pinks and whites over a back drop of silver, golds and ivory. The girls wore dove grey and so carried bouquets of yellow florals in 3 different hues…spectacularly happy! Silver candelabras graced half of the tables with the other coordinating arrangements in footed silver bowls. Elegant and flowing satin 2 tone table linens with hints of sparkly brooches and hanging crystals were the perfect accessory for this beautifully romantic room. White hydrangeas, yellow & pink garden roses, pink spray roses and yellow alstroemeria filled the room!

The day like her florals was full of sunshine….wishing Bessie and Billy a lifetime of happiness…may the years ahead of you be filled with love and lasting joy!

Jim & Michelle’s Casa Loma fairy tale.

p1040276

My meetings with this couple began in late 2010, we went through everything but nothing was set in stone. Michelle was overwhelmed by all of the possibilities for her flowers and needed time to process her thoughts. The concepts were easy enough, a wedding at Casa Loma that was very soft and romantic. After some time and their amazing trip to Thailand they came back to the studio and within 45 minutes we had a floral decor plan in place!

Soft pink peonies, garden roses and fluffy white hydrangeas offset with pops of vibrant purple dendrobium orchids and lisianthus. It came together so wonderfully and with the purple accents lights and backdrop of a true castle this lovely couple got the fairy tale wedding they so deserved.

What a pleasure to work with you both, wishing you never ending adventure!

Leesa’s Ride to Conquer Cancer 2011

Sometimes you take the road less travelled….last year when I experienced my husband and his friend crossing the finish line for their ride it sparked something in me. The energy was contagious, all of these people who didn’t know each other getting together for one important cause and challenging themselves for a 2 day bike ride. I thought a lot about what it would mean, the dedication it would take, the hours of training and fundraising….I put it on the back burner because to be honest I didn’t think I had it in me.

It was there on my bucket list though…a physical challenge such as a marathon or similar athletic event. And so came the gift of Blanche from my husband, my now beloved DeVinci road bike and after a couple rides I thought maybe this could be it. Early 2011 began with weekly 2 hour spinning sessions, I eventually graduated to outdoor training rides, aqua-fit classes, hill training and even more spinning. The weeks flew by and before I knew it..the big day had arrived. I was absolutely terrified.

Day one was such a challenge for me, somehow I tackled the Hamilton mountain. A 13km long hill climb without getting off my bike to walk it…this is what I have heard about in the past, focussing and mind over matter. I thought it was a load of bull but I can tell you now first hand, it is possible.  Day two was painful, I had used up most of what I had on the Saturday and at times during the day I thought I was finished, but there are these yellow flags. On the backs of the bikes ridden by cancer survivors yellow flags and each time I saw one I was reminded just why we were all there those 2 days. For this terrible disease that has touched so many people, too many. I wanted to cross that finish line for myself and for all of those who need the amazing facilities and staff of Princess Margaret Hospital.

It was the most challenging thing physically and emotionally I have done, I am so proud of myself. To be a part of something so inspiring and important was an experience I will not soon forget. I’m thinking the next thing I choose off of my bucket list will be a little less painful though!  ;-)

Thank you to everyone who supported me, donated, to the crew, volunteers, police officers, cheering stations…so many people.

There really is strength in numbers!

Flowers fit for a princess…The Royal Wedding bouquet.

So of course just like Princess Di’s wedding to Charles I woke up to watch the event…this time I wasn’t 7 years old! I set my alarm and prepared myself a tray of scones and proper tea for the affair.

It’s no surprise I was excited for a glimpse of that bouquet! Being a bit of a flower nerd I wondered what style it would be, what type of florals etc. In the end I was not disappointed, it was lovely. Soft, crisp, delicate and perfect for her beautiful Sarah Burton dress…like many have said very Grace Kelly.

The florals were designed by Irish born Shane Connolly, here is directly what was involved with her wedding posey…

The bouquet is a shield-shaped wired bouquet of myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth. The bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly and draws on the traditions of flowers of significance for the Royal Family, the Middleton family and on the Language of Flowers.

The flowers’ meanings in the bouquet are:

Lily-of-the-valley – Return of happiness

Sweet William – Gallantry

Hyacinth – Constancy of love

Ivy: Fidelity; marriage; wedded love; friendship; affection

Myrtle: the emblem of marriage; love.

The bouquet contains stems from a myrtle planted at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, by Queen Victoria in 1845, and a sprig from a plant grown from the myrtle used in The Queen’s wedding bouquet of 1947.

The tradition of carrying myrtle begun after Queen Victoria was given a nosegay containing myrtle by Prince Albert’s grandmother during a visit to Gotha in Germany. In the same year, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought Osborne House as a family retreat, and a sprig from the posy was planted against the terrace walls, where it continues to thrive today.

The myrtle was first carried by Queen Victoria eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, when she married in 1858, and was used to signify the traditional innocence of a bride.
