The stars align in Hogtown.

p1020064So coming off an exciting time here in Toronto…TIFF(Toronto International Film Festival) was held at venues all over this fair city. Everyone was a buzz with the stars and parties and of course the movies! I am fortunate to work with Scott Koch of Spin Radius Events who was at the forefront of the Diesel party in Yorkville. A dark and dramatic VIP area was created highlighted with punches of acid green floral arrangements; the perfect backdrop for those celebrities wanting a cappuccino or to grab a snack from the candy bar while perusing Diesel’s cutting edge clothing lines.

Andrew Richard Design launch party.

p1010439Andrew Richard Designs is an outdoor furniture showroom located at 571 Adelaide St West in downtown Toronto, beautiful modern furnishings and accessories for your patio to rival any indoor decor abounds. What you might know is that the amazing space that houses all of this is also available as a venue space! Recently I was approached to become one of their preferred vendors for their events and of course was excited for such a great opportunity.p1010441

To launch this event space Andrew Richard and his staff of event planners put on a fantastic party. DJ’s, food stations, champagne, vodka & beer bars not to mention an entire second floor of complimentary spa treatments. After setting up the florals for the event I was able to attend the party as well. The transformation of the space was truly impressive and I look forward to designing many events there in the future!

Using florals to make the most of a theme.

Choosing a theme for an event whether it be personal, corporate or a wedding is a huge commitment. There are hundreds of possibilities and often times the task of bringing it all together can be daunting. Event decor is the easiest way to transform a standard rental space into the look for your event. Draping, linens, prop rentals, entertainment, food are all very important aspects to translate your idea but don’t discount the incorporation of creative floral designs.

Many floral designers myself included jump at the chance to push boundaries and think outside the box when it comes to floral centerpieces and accents for their clients. Think about where people spend the majority of their time when at the event, their table. They spend a large portion of the evening in an intimate circle so their experience of the centerpiece is what they usually remember so its very important to ensure it helps set the tone.

Our process is to begin with sketches or line drawings then when a general direction is chosen we move on to obtaining accessories and then making a sample. Its amazing how flowers can be transformed into something sculptural and in perfect keeping with a theme with a little innovation and imagination! So whether it be an evening Under the Sea or a 50s sock hop be sure to utilize the endless creativity of your floral expert!

Good things come in small packages.

So whether its affected you or not the economy is changing things. For me I have noticed it with my corporate event orders this year. Companies even if they aren’t showing any losses are being cautious and curbing their spending. This usually spells trouble for decor since its the first thing to be cut because lets face it people still want to eat and drink at a holiday party! What I’ve been seeing is instead of the standard 50 table centerpieces with a per table amount is companies providing me with an overall budget amount. Generally speaking there are food tables, cruisers, bistros and a bar…lots of mingling and seating areas.

What this creates is the task of making the budget stretch, making multiple smaller pieces with high impact but less materials. At first it was kind of frustrating, I had become accustomed to making complicated arrangements with many steps and flowers resulting in a cohesive very decorated “look” for the room. But now here I was trying to do the same thing but had to find a new approach. Somewhere along the lines though something clicked. It was like I was reminded about why I love flowers so much, they are beautiful…yes Leesa quite the revelation you’re thinking right? I know its sounds odd but a single bloom in the right vase placed in a series is immensely striking. I found these amazing vases everywhere I looked and started experimenting with colour, shape and texture and I was hooked.

In the next coming weeks I have a few events where I get to put all of this into practice. Stay tuned for more pics and feedback from the party goers!
