Passionate about purple!

dreams

Here at the Events in Bloom studio things are really getting busy! We are working away on some amazing upcoming events. Our last few months have been great and after compiling some pictures of the latest work an obvious theme jumped out at me…purple! Whether its a deep amethyst snapdragon, a smoky lilac rose or a aubergine calla lily one thing is for sure..purple is hot. Let’s face it is regal and dramatic…it pairs well with cream and pops against chartreuse.

Historically the colour purple is associated with royalty and nobility…today it is definitely an important design trend.

Something borrowed, something blue-Kimberlee & Brian

p1020833

I have to admit it, sometimes it’s nice when a bride comes in with a very specific vision in mind that just needs some fine tuning. This was exactly the case for Kimberlee & Brian. The bride loves the soft look of blue and white hydrangeas and wanted them to be the main focus of her floral decor. Simple hand-tied bouquets and low compact arrangements in over sized silver mint julep cups were the perfect pairing for the dark rich wood of Casa Loma.

Billowy soft fabric draping and black garden urns full of the same hydrangea was all the conservatory needed. The day was hot but beautiful, the opposite of a worrisome forecast that included thunderstorms and heavy rains.  All the best to Kim & Brian as they begin their lives together from Events in Bloom.

Soft and romantic…tickled pink.

p1020803

I had the pleasure of doing the florals for a lovely young couple who with the help of their event planner decided on a very soft and romantic look. Billowy spheres of white hydrangeas, pink sweet akito roses on top of sparkly silver candelabras with accents of pearls and bling in the centres of the flowers.

Classic bouquets of all white and all pink roses for the girls and a sweetheart table that embodied romance completed the look. Keeping things very simple with only a few different florals and a clear direction creates a defined look that has high impact without being overwhelming. What a beautiful wedding, I was happy to be a part of it!

Spring is in the air…beautiful wedding ideas.

img_1044Who doesn’t love Spring? After a long cold winter there is nothing better than that first day of sunshine and warmth. Buds on the trees and the first bursts of colour from crocuses and forsythia. Everything smells fresh and new, people seem to be in a better mood all around. I love when I start to see a change at the growers, seemingly overnight I enter the cooler and I am met with the smell of hyacinth, rows of tulips and of course buckets of pussy willow branches. What a beautiful time of year for a wedding! A new beginning in life and in nature.forsythia

Decorating for a spring wedding can be so easy. Simple bouquets of colourful tulips for instance tied with satin ribbon or small potted primulas as accents on a bar or cake table. Early lilacs as a bridal bouquet and lily of the valley boutonnieres are stunning choices for a spring wedding party. Lush mixed arrangements of daffodils, hyacinth & ranunculus with soft pussy willow branches for height in galvanized tin containers evoke a feeling of the sweet season of spring.

primula-primeraOf course some see it as a risky choice weather wise but there is always a chance of rain no matter when your big day is…besides everyone knows that April showers bring May flowers and what could be more beautiful?

Keeping up with traditions.

Roses mean love, lilies mean virtue. Centuries ago brides carried pungent herbs and spices down the aisle meant to ward off evil spirits but today brides carry beautiful bouquets of flowers that coordinate with her wedding decor and season.

leisThought it might be fun to research some floral wedding traditions from around the world. Did you know that the tradition of wearing a white wedding gown began in France several hundred years ago? In French weddings even today the most important aspect of chosen florals is fragrance.

In Spain orange tree blossoms are the most popular flower for weddings, theses blooms are meant to bring the couple happiness and fulfillment because it is the only tree that bears fruit and has flowers at the same time! In Thailand the bride & groom have their hands linked together with a chain of florals wishing upon them a life full of luck and beauty.orange_blossom

Chains of florals are very common in many cultures, take the lei for instance. The lei symbolizes love & respect; created from fragrant, exotic blooms & colourful ribbons they are an integral part of Hawaiian celebrations.

Are you incorporating any traditions using flowers in your wedding? What about a throw away bouquet? Many brides today are bringing this tradition back. It is very common to ask your florist to design a small version of your bouquet to toss when the time comes so you can keep yours to enjoy.

What about tossing petals after you have said your I-Do’s? Or presenting each matriarch of the family with a single bloom during the ceremony? Even the simple act of distinguishing special guests with boutonnieres and corsages is a tradition! So even if you don’t want wear something borrowed or blue perhaps a floral tradition from days past or another culture would be a nice addition to your special day.
